Education is considered a human right in Sri Lanka and is generally available free of charge all the way through undergraduate degree programs.

There are of course many paid options available and often free doesn’t really mean absolutely Rs. 0 per month! In this section we give you some idea of the actual costs so you can take that into consideration in your budgeting.

Public Elementary and Secondary Schools

These schools do not charge for tuition. However there are various facilities fees and other charges that parents can expect to have to pay. Generally this can be in the range of about Rs. 1,000 to 2,000 per term. Parents are also expected to donate their time and energy for various projects such as classroom cleaning, classroom painting and more. If your child participates in an extra-curricular activities – especially sports – you must plan to pay more fees.

Note

The Ministry of Education has recently announced a crackdown on these extra “fees”. While we laud the effort, it is also the reality that the schools simply do not receive enough funds from the state to do all they need to do. Thus some amount of “fee collection” is a necessity.
